About the Role
Trumia is a new-generation E-Money and Payment Services financial services provider, licensed and regulated in the EU. The Institution has set out to provide its clients with customer-centric and innovative financial services. It offers both consumer wallets and corporate accounts, driven by state-of-the-art technology to make its financial services seamless and beneficial to its users.
Are you an ambitious AML professional ready to make a high-impact move into fintech leadership? Whether you are an established compliance leader or a high-potential senior specialist ready to step up into a Deputy MLRO role, we are looking for a key professional to help drive our AML/CFT strategy and champion regulatory excellence in a fast-paced EMI environment. Acting as a core pillar of our Compliance function, you won't just execute policies - you’ll deputise for the MLRO, advise on high-risk onboarding, manage real-time transaction monitoring, and help navigate major EU regulatory shifts like AMLR and AMLD6. If you hold (or are eligible for) MFSA/FIAU approval, possess a strong regulatory mindset, and thrive at the intersection of complex payments, risk-based decision-making, and regulatory engagement, we want to hear from you.
Responsibilities
Transaction Monitoring & Suspicious Activity Reporting
Review and disposition alerts generated by the transaction monitoring system, applying risk-based judgement calibrated to the Institution's Business Risk Assessment (BRA).
Prepare and, where authorised, submit Suspicious Transaction Reports (STRs)/Suspicious Activity Reports (SARs) to the FIAU via the goAML platform.
Maintain STR/SAR case files to evidentiary standard, including rationale for reporting or non-reporting decisions.
Customer Due Diligence (CDD/EDD)
Oversee CDD and Enhanced Due Diligence for higher-risk customer segments (PEPs, high-risk jurisdictions, complex ownership structures, correspondent-style relationships where applicable to the EMI's agent/distributor network).
Review and approve onboarding escalations referred by the first line, including source of funds/source of wealth analysis.
Support periodic and trigger-event driven customer risk reviews.
Sanctions & PEP Screening
Oversee sanctions list screening (EU, UN, OFAC as relevant to the Institution's exposure) and PEP screening processes, including true-match adjudication and escalation of positive hits.
Support the Institution's obligations under EU restrictive measures regulations, including asset-freeze reporting where triggered.
Governance, Policy & Reporting
Assist the MLRO in maintaining the AML/CFT Policy, BRA, and Customer Acceptance Policy in line with FIAU Implementing Procedures and MFSA guidance.
Contribute to the annual MLRO report to the Board/Compliance Committee.
Support completion of the FIAU Annual AML/CFT Return and responses to FIAU/MFSA supervisory examinations, on-site inspections, and information requests.
Deputise for the MLRO at Board and Risk/Compliance Committee meetings as required.
Training & Culture
Deliver or coordinate AML/CFT training for staff and, where relevant, the Institution's agents/distributors under the EMD2 passporting/agent network model.
Maintain training records to evidence compliance with ongoing FIAU training obligations.
Regulatory Change Management
Monitor developments in EU AML legislation (AMLR, AMLD6, transition to AMLA supervision), MFSA Rules for EMIs, and FIAU guidance, and support gap analyses and implementation plans.
Track interaction with PSD2/PSR safeguarding and operational resilience requirements (DORA) where these intersect with financial crime controls.
Payment-Specific Risk
Apply AML/CFT judgement to PI/EMI-specific AML risk typologies
Liaise with the Nominated Officer function (if separately constituted) on fraud-AML overlap cases.
Requirements
Minimum 3–5 years' AML/CFT experience within a regulated financial services entity (prior experience within an EMI, payment institution is preferred). Direct prior experience as a Deputy MLRO is not mandatory - we are eager to consider high-potential Senior AML Specialists, Compliance Officers, or TM/EDD Leads ready to step into a leadership function.
Working knowledge of the PMLFTR, FIAU Implementing Procedures, and MFSA Rulebook provisions applicable to EMIs (in particular the AML/CFT and governance chapters), or demonstrated capacity to rapidly master new regulatory frameworks.
Familiarity with EMD2/PSD2 (and awareness of PSD3/PSR transitional provisions), and their interaction with AML obligations.
Practical experience with transaction monitoring systems, sanctions/PEP screening tools, and goAML reporting (or transferable hands-on exposure to similar regulatory reporting platforms).
Relevant professional qualification preferred (ICA Diploma in AML, ACAMS, or equivalent).
Degree in Law, Finance, Criminology, or a related discipline preferred but not mandatory where offset by demonstrable experience and high potential.
Eligible to be approved by the MFSA/FIAU as a Deputy MLRO under the fit and proper regime (no adverse findings affecting suitability).
Skills & Attributes
Sound regulatory judgement and ability to make defensible, well-evidenced risk-based decisions under time pressure.
Strong written communication skills for STR narratives, policy drafting, and regulator-facing correspondence.
Ability to operate independently and deputise credibly for the MLRO, including representing the compliance function to the Board.
Comfortable working within a second-line function that interacts closely with first-line operations, customer support, and payments teams.
Discretion and integrity befitting a controlled-function role with access to sensitive customer and transactional data.
Benefits
Private Health Insurance (after probation)
Attractive office location and facilities
Daily breakfasts and Friday lunches in the office
Regular office & team building events
